Cardio Schmardio? Why Your Heart Doesn’t Care What You Think

By C², Connie Colleen Wyatt, Occupational Therapist, PNW Home for Life PLLC

Okay, I know what you’re thinking:

“Connie, didn’t you just write a post about moving your butt?”

Yes, yes I did. And here I am again, telling you yet again that you need to move. Why? Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned working with my awesome, aging-at-home patients, it’s this:

Your heart doesn’t care how you feel about cardio. It cares whether you do it.

Why Should Boomers Care About VO2 Max? (And What the Heck Is It?)

VO2 max is a fancy term for how well your body uses oxygen during exercise. Think of it as your heart and lungs’ “gas mileage.” The higher it is, the longer and better you’ll live.

Want to age in place without your recliner swallowing you alive? Cardio keeps your ticker ticking so you can:

✅ Chase grandkids (or your dog).
✅ Travel without being that person on the scooter tour.
✅ Dance to Earth, Wind & Fire at weddings without an ambulance cameo.

Isn’t Cardio Boring?

Only if you make it boring. If you think cardio means slogging on a treadmill watching your life flash before your eyes, you need a new plan.

✅ Crank up the Beatles and march around your kitchen.
✅ Go outside and walk like you’re late for happy hour.
✅ Try swimming, biking, or dancing in your living room.
✅ Hate “exercise”? Fine. Just move more on purpose.

Because let’s be real: “Cardio Schmardio” won’t save you when your heart needs you to be stronger.

The Lifestyle YOU Want, Not the One You’re Told to Want

I’m not here to tell you to train for a marathon unless you want to. I’m here to help you live your life:

Want to garden? Cardio helps you stay strong enough to bend, dig, and carry.
Want to travel? Cardio keeps you upright and energized.
Want to stay in your home? Cardio helps you avoid falls and frailty.

You don’t have to become a gym rat. You just need to move consistently enough to keep living how you want.

Didn’t You Already Say This, Connie?

Yep. Because it’s that important.

And guess what? I’m going to keep saying it until you get up from your recliner and take your future into your own hands (and feet, and heart, and lungs).

Final Pep Talk

Cardio isn’t punishment. It’s your ticket to living the life you want for as long as you can.

Your heart doesn’t care if you hate cardio. It cares that you do it. So crank the tunes, grab a friend, and get your VO2 max up so you can keep aging in place with style.

Now, get moving. I’ll be here cheering you on—again and again and again.

Your heart called. It wants a workout, not excuses.
